Gregory Ugwi, a former Goldman Sachs strategist, co-founded Thinknum Alternative Data to leverage online data for investment insights. Alongside his classmate Justin Zhen, they transitioned from traditional roles in finance to create a data-driven business. After securing initial funding from 500 Startups, they emphasized the need for not just a product, but effective distribution strategies, honing skills in branding, sales, and market entry. Their journey, while challenging, reflects the essential nature of adaptation in entrepreneurship, as they have since secured substantial funding and clients, including Goldman Sachs.
Companies are going online, e-commerce is growing, leaving a lot of data trails where you can understand whether or not a company is going to do well.
It was sort of emphasized to us, and I take it with me still today, that you have to spend a lot of time on distribution.
Ugwi and Zhen worked on building out those essential skills... it’s not just about the product, but how to effectively sell and scale it.
Not that the journey was easy... Focus on distribution, not just problem and product.
