E-prescriptions became mandatory in Germany nearly two years ago, with prescriptions added directly to patients' health cards or accessed via the E-Rezept app. Pharmacies have reported prescriptions sometimes missing from cards, causing missed access to treatment and extra phone calls or follow-up visits. The RSA-2048 encryption used across the system will expire at the end of 2025, and Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) will replace it for stronger security. More than 50,000 electronic health professional cards (eHBA) and numerous card terminals and connectors are not yet updated.
