TELL US: Have you faced discrimination in Germany's rental market?
Finding an apartment in Germany is difficult due to tight housing markets. Many foreigners and Germans with names that do not sound ethnically German report discrimination during the rental process. A prior survey found “finding somewhere to live” as the life aspect where the most respondents experienced discrimination. Studies show racial discrimination in the housing market is a real problem. A DeZIM survey found Black and Muslim people were less likely to be invited to flat viewings. An SVR report states discrimination against people with migration backgrounds continues and is particularly widespread in tight housing markets. A survey is requested to collect personal experiences of discrimination while applying to rent in Germany.
"A recent report by the Council of Economic Experts on Integration and Migration (SVR) also notes that discrimination against people with migration backgrounds continues to occur, and remains "particularly widespread in tight housing markets"."
"Do you feel you've discriminated against while applying to rent an apartment or house in Germany? Please take a moment to share your experience in our short survey and we may use your answers in a future article."
