"The whale freed itself from a sandbank on Friday and was escorted by a flotilla of vessels that hoped to guide it through German and Danish waters to the Atlantic."
A 10-meter-long humpback whale stranded off Germany's Baltic coast is in critical condition after several rescue attempts. The whale, believed to be male, is weakened and possibly sick, with injuries suspected from a fishing net. Authorities have created a restricted area to allow the whale to rest and regain strength. Humpback whales are not native to the Baltic, and the whale may have followed fish or been disoriented. Despite initial efforts to guide it back to the Atlantic, the whale became trapped again on a sandbank.
