Germany: No recovery in sight for the economy
The chancellor and cabinet ministers met with the five economics professors of the German Council of Economic Experts. The council’s latest report lowers the growth forecast and indicates stagnation rather than expansion. GDP is expected to grow by 0.5% this year and 0.8% next year. Inflation is expected to rise to 3% in 2026. Business leaders express growing frustration with the government and warn that Germany’s global competitive position is more precarious than at any time since World War II. One in four jobs is linked to the industrial sector, and exports of cars, machinery, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals have faced weakening competitiveness since the downturn that began in 2019.
