Wicklow woman who lost mother to dementia aims to make fundraiser annual event after maiden tea day
A Rathdrum woman organised a charity tea morning to thank the Alzheimer Society of Ireland for support provided to her late mother during illness. Her mother, Marie, had dementia and died in May 2015, and carers were provided by the society. The event took place as part of national Alzheimer’s tea day and raised €1,520, exceeding an initial target of €500 to €600. Around 40 people attended, local businesses donated prizes for a raffle, and tickets were sold for a national draw on May 29. The fundraiser’s success led her to plan making the tea day an annual event, with thanks given to supporters and local contributors including musicians.
"There are currently 64,000 people with dementia in Ireland and the number of people with the condition is expected to more than double in the next 25 years to over 150,000 by 2045."
"Sandra O'Shaugnessy of Rathdrum organised the charity tea morning, which took place in N11 Avondale Rathdrum, as part of the national Alzheimer's tea day earlier this month."
"“It was my first time organising the fundraiser, and I said I would be happy to raise between €500 and €600, so I was absolutely thrilled to have raised €1,500 on the day, while an man who lives in the area also provided a €20 donation, which brings the total raised to €1,520,” said Sandra."
"“Throughout the morning we welcomed around 40 people, and I have to also thank the local businesses who made donations towards the raffle we held on the day, while I also sold 14 or 15 books of tickets for the national draw the Alzheimer Society of Ireland will be holding on May 29.”"
