A humble soup kitchen on Dublin's Bow Street, opened in 1969, evolved to serve over 800 meals daily by 2018. This initiative was started by Brother Kevin, inspired by witnessing hunger and poverty first-hand. He emphasized that everyone is regarded as a child of God, reflecting a deep commitment to inclusivity. Despite Ireland's growing wealth, the need for such services increased. His interaction with Pope Francis highlighted the universal message of kindness, where care for the marginalized remains crucial in society.
"I saw the people looking into dustbins and taking food out of the dustbins. As a follower of Saint Francis, I decided something should be done for them."
"Here we do not ask where you come from, who you are. You are a child of God."
The centre was providing more than 800 meals a day by 2018. His legacy of devotion and care will live on in the minds of those shunted to the margins of our ever busier world.
"The devil enters from the pockets," Pope Francis remarked, highlighting the importance of ensuring those without money have a safe place to go.
