Kerry Sheron, 69, died from a traumatic head injury after a vicious assault allegedly committed by 32-year-old Navy veteran Thomas Caleb Butler. The GoFundMe reported about $50,000 in donations within roughly a week. The fundraiser stated funds would cover funeral and memorial expenses, travel costs, and immediate family needs. Police believed the May 20 assault outside Sheron’s Buchanan Street home was not politically motivated. Prosecutors alleged Butler attacked Sheron without provocation, and Butler pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats, and battery. Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia said Sheron suffered catastrophic injuries from a single punch followed by subsequent head-area hits.
