Inside France: Tractor convoys, skiing in La Rochelle and ping pong
"Welcome back and welcome to 2026 - I hope you are refreshed, relaxed and reinvigorated after the festive break. It certainly seems like French farmers are revitalised by the break - they have restarted protests, and the first tractor convoy arrived in Paris this week, managing to somehow evade the police who local authorities had ordered to stop them (I am admittedly not a policing specialist, but in my experience tractors are neither speedy nor stealthy)."
"Their protest at the Arc de Triomphe and the Assemblee nationale focused mainly on the EU's Mercosur deal, and led to French president Emmanuel Macron declaring that France would vote against the signing of the deal at EU level - tractors protests are also taking place in Brussels. However livestock farmers from the south-west battling against Lumpy Skin Disease were also represented in the convoys."
"Ongoing outbreaks of the contagious virus have led organisers to take the sad but sensible decision to not have cattle at next month's Salon de l'Agriculture - a real shame as the huge and beautiful beasts are always one of the highlights of the show (the other highlight being the incredible selection of French food and wine products, obviously)."
French farmers restarted protests with a tractor convoy reaching Paris and evading police, staging demonstrations at the Arc de Triomphe and the Assemblee nationale. The protests focused mainly on the EU-Mercosur trade deal and prompted President Emmanuel Macron to declare that France would vote against signing the deal at EU level. Tractors protests are also taking place in Brussels. Livestock farmers from the southwest fighting Lumpy Skin Disease joined the convoys. Ongoing outbreaks of the contagious virus led organisers to decide not to display cattle at next month's Salon de l'Agriculture. Doctors are engaged in a strike and the government plans to ban social media use for under-15s. Paris experienced snowy scenes and notable table tennis vocabulary coverage.
