"French prosecutors have demanded fines of up to €5,000 for party-goers who attended a fancy dress do as Ku Klux Klan members or in blackface. "There was nothing funny" in their choice of costumes, only "unacceptable" acts that showed a "normalisation of latent racism", the prosecutor in the case said. Eight defendants, aged between 21 and 56 - five who went to the October 18 party in Ku Klux Klan garb and three who painted their faces black - appeared in court on Tuesday"
"Images that appeared on social media of the party, including ones showing those disguised as Ku Klux Klan members pretending to strangle the three who had their faces painted black, were shown in the court. One of the defendants who had worn the white robes and pointy hood of the US white supremacist group said he had not known what the Ku Klux Klan was about. "For me, it was just a cult... Searching on Google Images there was no visible racist tone," he said."
Prosecutors demanded fines of up to €5,000 for eight partygoers who attended a fancy dress event dressed as Ku Klux Klan members or in blackface. The prosecutor called the costumes "unacceptable" and said they showed a "normalisation of latent racism." Attendees included five in KKK garb and three in blackface, aged 21 to 56; two blackface revellers were off-duty firemen suspended pending an internal inquiry. Social media images showed KKK-disguised attendees pretending to strangle those in blackface. Defendants claimed ignorance or said it was "just a bit of fun." The prosecutor sought €5,000 fines with €4,000 suspended and a verdict is set for 9 January.
