""This film concludes a quest that started at age seven, when I saw James Whale's Frankenstein films for the first time," del Toro says in his director's statement. "In Boris Karloff's eyes, I felt the jolt of recognition in that seminal moment: Gothic horror became my church, and he became my messiah.""
""I've lived with Mary Shelley's creation all my life," he adds. "For me, it's the Bible, but I wanted to make it my own, to sing it back in a different key with a different emotion.""
""I wanted the movie to test the capabilities of every single craft in moviemaking," he says. "There are huge sets, huge props, and a complex wardrobe. I wanted it to feel like an old movie that was made in the heyday of Hollywood. I want it to be luscious and beautiful and operatic."
Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as his creature. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August 2025 and releases on Netflix UK on 7 November 2025. Production lasted 100 days with principal photography in Toronto and multiple Scottish locations — Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeenshire and East Lothian — plus Wiltshire in England. The production emphasized large practical sets, oversized props and complex wardrobes to achieve an operatic, old-Hollywood aesthetic, with many elements constructed physically to create a lush, handcrafted cinematic experience.
