Robert Duvall moved to New York after a brief Army stint and supported himself as a postal clerk while training as an actor alongside Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman. The three men navigated the 1950s–60s New York theater scene as struggling character actors before rising to Hollywood prominence. Duvall’s breakout film role was Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). He earned his first Academy Award nomination for portraying Tom Hagen in The Godfather, ultimately receiving seven Oscar nominations and winning Best Actor in 1983 for Tender Mercies. Duvall died at age 95 in February.
