"I usually know nothing about the subject before I start,"
"And I know there are those that feel I know nothing about it when it's finished!"
"He has a way of finding in reality some of the most surreal, absurd moments that I've ever seen anywhere,"
Frederick Wiseman made roughly 50 documentaries from the mid-1960s through 2023 and died at age 96. His family issued a joint statement with Zipporah Films. His work chronicled the inner workings of everyday institutions, including the Idaho state legislature (State Legislature, 2007), the New York Public Library (Ex Libris, 2017), and a Philadelphia high school (High School, 1968). Wiseman also directed theater productions by Samuel Beckett and Luigi Pirandello in the U.S. and Europe. Peers noted his super-charged yet subtle interpretation of everyday life and his ability to reveal surreal, absurd moments in reality.
