Darkman II: The Return of Durant, despite its catastrophic ratings, showcases entertaining qualities. Premiering on television three years after its video release, and following the original’s success, it fell to significant lows in viewership. Directed by Bradford May instead of Sam Raimi, it lacked the first film's noirish quality. However, excellent performances, particularly by Larry Drake as the villain, stand out. The film cleverly utilizes a modest budget and includes impressive set pieces, utilizing footage and soundtrack from the original, enriching its presentation despite its flaws.
Darkman II: The Return of Durant premiered on television almost three years to the day it first hit video rental stores - interestingly Blockbuster, who'd been integral in the original's rental success, had practically begged Universal to make a sequel.
Its catastrophic prime time showing, however, doesn't quite reflect its quality.
With TV movie veteran Bradford May in the driving seat instead of visual storyteller Sam Raimi, the caper inevitably lacks its predecessor's noirish flair.
Nevertheless, it still makes the most of the modest $4 million at its disposal with several eye-catching set pieces.
