Nike and Palace Are Opening a Community Sports Club in South London
"Built in 1895 as a public swimming baths, Manor Place in Elephant & Castle was also used a boxing venue (the Kray twins and Henry Cooper fought there) before falling into disrepair. Now Nike and Palace are giving the venue a new lease of life, featuring three zones for football, skating and creativity. The Park and The Cage will be the main sports spaces."
"The Park is a polished concrete skatepark with ramps, ledges and benches that nods to beloved London skate spots like Southbank, Stockwell and Victoria Benches, with a programme that includes skate jams and girl-only sessions. That sits directly above the The Cage, a unique underground football area, which'll host open play sessions, community competitions and invitational three-on-three seasonal football leagues."
"We had an idea of creating a large space for the community that would be about skateboarding and sport, and a space you could generally hang out in. When we spoke about the project, we knew Nike was the only brand in the world that could make something like this happen. We want Manor Place to be something positive for London - a city that has given us so much - and we're really excited to give something back."
Manor Place in Elephant & Castle was built in 1895 as public swimming baths and later served as a boxing venue before falling into disrepair. Nike and Palace have restored the building and created three zones dedicated to football, skating and creativity. The Park features a polished concrete skatepark with ramps, ledges and benches inspired by Southbank, Stockwell and Victoria Benches, and will host skate jams and girl-only sessions. The Cage is an underground football area for open play, competitions and three-on-three seasonal leagues. The Front Room and The Residency offer exhibition, workshop and rotating studio spaces for emerging creatives.
