Hungary's political climate has seen a marked shift as Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government engages in a controversial campaign aimed at dehumanizing Ukrainians. The campaign, led by Alexandra Szentkiralyi, utilizes social media, billboards, and advertisements to suggest that Ukraine's EU accession could bring crime and chaos to Hungary. These messages assert that Ukrainians are akin to mafia members, posing serious threats to Hungarian society. This strategy marks a significant escalation in anti-Ukrainian rhetoric, targeting the very essence of national identity and security as the government seeks to secure public opposition against Ukraine's EU membership through the Voks 2025 consultation.
The reel, which was posted on Facebook and TikTok, is just 10 seconds long. People in Hungary have been bombarded with content such as this for over two months now.
It was also the first Orban campaign to collectively dehumanize the citizens of a whole country and defame them as dangerous, merciless criminals who are allegedly out to destroy Hungary.
