Crete wildfire causes evacuations of hotels and homes
Briefly

A wildfire erupted on Crete's south coast, prompting evacuation orders for hotels and homes, especially near Ierapetra. Strong winds exacerbated the situation, allowing flames to spread through hillside forests, leaving areas of Ferma, Agia Fotia, and Koutsounari severely impacted. Residents described the destruction as 'biblical.' An emergency alert was issued, and continuous evacuations took place, including by boat for those on the beach. Despite no reported casualties, individuals suffered respiratory issues, and over 150 firefighters battled the blaze, which faced operational challenges due to the absence of air support.
Residents in the areas of Ferma, Agia Fotia, and Koutsounari have referred to the wildfire as a 'complete disaster,' with reports of an extensive destruction of property.
An emergency alert sent out led to evacuation orders in the regions affected, including the villages of Achlia and Galini, with many evacuees taking refuge in an indoor gym.
Yiannis Androulakis, the Lassithi region's deputy governor, indicated that due to the absence of air assets, the primary focus was on rescuing belongings from the houses.
More than 150 firefighters have been deployed to combat the wildfire, which has formed three fronts and poses a serious threat due to strong winds exceeding 11 Beaufort.
