More than 900,000 people in eastern, central and northern provinces have been evacuated as Super Typhoon Fung-wong approached the Philippines. Fung-wong intensified to a super typhoon early Sunday and was expected to make landfall over Aurora province later that day or in the early hours of Monday. The storm, known locally as Uwan, followed Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left at least 224 people dead in central provinces and caused flash floods and landslides before moving to Vietnam, where at least five people died. Fung-wong carried maximum sustained winds of 185 kph with gusts to 230 kph, spanned 1,600 km, and prompted school closures and flight cancellations.
