Earth911 launched on October 29, 1991 as a recycling directory focused on motor oil and serving only Arizona via the toll-free 1-800-CLEANUP. Long before widespread web adoption, local and state hotlines provided fragmented recycling information, including 248 separate environmental hotlines in California alone. The organization adopted the Earth911 name after the U.S. EPA referenced the service as "Earth's 911" and supported national expansion with a grant. The website debuted in 1996 at cleanup.org and the directory grew to include nationwide listings for over 100 materials. Early outreach included celebrity public service announcements. Trey Granger worked at Earth911 from 2007 to 2014 as the site's first content editor and oversaw expansion of the recycling directory.
