"For the first time the Premier League is going to have its own customers. We're looking to build a business, but we're also looking to learn to see how that might be replicable around the world."
"It's going to be a really exciting product, and the big change is I think that the Premier League will have its own customers and means us delving into things like promotion and pricing, said Masters. That's why it's an important step for us."
The Premier League is launching Premier League Plus, a new streaming service providing live coverage of all 380 matches directly to fans, beginning next season in August. Initially available only in Singapore, the service represents the first time the Premier League will sell match coverage directly to consumers rather than through traditional broadcast rights holders. Developed in partnership with existing rights holder Starhub, Premier League Plus operates as a 24-hour service. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters describes the initiative as a learning opportunity to understand direct consumer engagement, including promotion and pricing strategies. The move aims to test a model potentially replicable globally, following years of speculation about a Netflix-style offering. International broadcast revenues have grown 27% in the latest three-year rights cycle, demonstrating the league's commercial strength.
