'Greener Bantams' leading tree-planting initiative
"It's a simple way to hopefully inspire others with their relationship with the environment. We want to plant a tree for every goal scored this season and have started with last season's tally. It's a bit of fun but more goals, more trees, so everyone wins."
"Lots of studies suggest that we're healthier and happier when around trees. Trees help prevent flooding, provide shelter and shade and there are lots of training grounds where there is land with space for trees and all the benefits they bring. Breaking it down to something practical and fun feels tangible because anyone can plant a tree."
Bradford City Football Club has planted 154 trees at their training ground, with each tree representing a goal scored by their men's and women's teams during the previous season. This initiative, called Greener Bantams, is part of a partnership with the Woodland Trust charity, which supplied the trees for free. The club aims to plant one tree for every goal scored this season, creating an incentive where more goals result in more trees. Bradford City is the first EFL club to participate in this program, involving first-team players, academy players, and local school pupils. The Woodland Trust, which has planted 68.5 million trees since 1972, emphasizes that trees provide health benefits, prevent flooding, and offer shelter and shade.
