San Jose program helps women start child day care centers - San Jose Spotlight
"The fact that they're seeing themselves as that changes a community,"
"We keep opening those doors."
"Having a day care gives me the opportunity of doing that and more,"
"The program has given me a lot of hope for being able to achieve it."
Executive Director Veronica Goei started the Jobs to Grow Child Care program in 2021 to address a severe shortage of child care centers on the East Side after many pandemic closures. The program has enrolled 80 women over five years, with 65 graduates and an 81% rate of earning child care licenses; 15 women are currently in classes. Funding has come from the Robin Hood Foundation, Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and Latino Community Foundation. Graduates are opening home-based day cares, increasing affordable child care options and offering economic mobility and small-business ownership opportunities. Participants have advocated for eased licensing barriers and higher pay.
