"The Knowledge Alliance noted in the memo more IES funding could lapse 'if the amounts currently allocated to programs are not fully spent.'"
"'While IES funds are being withheld, crucial activities are not being funded, including research, data collections, technical assistance and support for states,' the memo says."
The Education Department has until September 30 to allocate approximately $289 million for education research, or the funds will revert to the U.S. Treasury. The Knowledge Alliance's review of Office of Management and Budget documents reveals that the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is set to lose about 82 percent of its funding for special education. IES, responsible for federal education data and research funding, has faced significant budget cuts under the current administration, impacting essential research and support activities.
