Disneyland's likely 3rd theme park has been nearly 30 years in the making
"Recently, Disneyland filed building permits with the city of Anaheim for one of the locations named in DisneylandForward, the massive multiyear development plan that will likely lead to the company's third California park."
"With the 1989 smash hit that was "The Little Mermaid," the company emerged from its early 1980s slump, when flops like "The Black Cauldron" threatened the future of its animation division altogether. Then-CEO Michael Eisner looked to aggressively expand, especially in the company's reliably lucrative theme parks division."
Disney has long pursued a third theme park in California, with efforts dating back nearly 30 years to the Michael Eisner era. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Disney sought aggressive expansion after the success of “The Little Mermaid,” including construction of EuroDisney in 1988 and its 1992 opening. Reporting around Disney’s land purchases indicated the company had long studied a major addition to its Anaheim theme park, alongside plans for a studio-tour and shopping complex in Burbank. Uncertainty remained because Disney also negotiated with Anaheim to build WestCot, a West Coast version of Epcot at Disneyland.
