"Frank Gehry, the architect whose work was so identifiable that he guest starred on The Simpsons, is dead at 96. Meaghan Lloyd, chief of staff at Gehry Partners LLP, told the Associated Press that Gehry died in his Santa Monica home after a brief respiratory illness. Gehry won every major architecture prize there is, per the Associated Press, including the ultra-prestigious Pritzker Prize. His work was described as "refreshingly original and totally American" despite him being Canadian."
"Gehry was born Ephraim Owen Goldberg in 1929. He moved with his family from his native Toronto to Los Angeles in 1947. At the suggestion of his first wife, he changed his name, who worried antisemitism would hold back his career. Gehry pursued architecture after a ceramics teacher saw his talent for three-dimensional art. "It was like the first thing in my life that I'd done well in," he said."
Frank Gehry died at age 96 at his Santa Monica home after a brief respiratory illness. He won major architecture prizes including the Pritzker Prize, Americans for the Arts lifetime achievement award, and the Companion of the Order of Canada. He was born Ephraim Owen Goldberg in 1929 in Toronto and moved to Los Angeles in 1947. He changed his name at his first wife's suggestion because of concerns about antisemitism. A ceramics teacher noticed his three-dimensional talent and steered him toward architecture. He studied at USC and at Harvard's Graduate School of Design before leaving to start a cardboard furniture company. Early projects included the David Cabin, Santa Monica Place, and a deconstructivist Santa Monica home wrapped in chain-link, concrete, and glass. His signature style favored sloping walls, organic forms, and metallic facades that rejected traditional rectangles.
