Downtown Brooklyn artist returns to glassblowing after cancer battle
"I've studied with seven of the greatest Italian masters. I've been all over the world blowing glass. It's my passion. I do private commissions. I did 200 glasses for Michael Bloomberg for his mansion in Bermuda."
"There’s a lot of failure, but out of that failure comes success. The days were long and grueling, taking immunotherapy and chemotherapy for five and six, seven hours."
"I was at a bus stop on 8th Street in the Village, and I got a call and she said, 'You have tongue cancer, and we need to talk about your life options.' I got really scared."
"But if you are sick, that's the place to go. Now, Provenzano is back at UrbanGlass, creating art and sharing his story of survival."
Charles Provenzano, a 75-year-old glassblower from Brooklyn, faced a life-altering diagnosis of tongue cancer in 2023. His passion for glassblowing, developed over 40 years, was threatened as the craft relies on the ability to blow air through the mouth. After participating in a clinical trial at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Provenzano experienced a significant reduction in his tumor and underwent surgery. Now in remission, he has returned to his studio at UrbanGlass, continuing to create art and teach others about the craft.
