GM to spend $63M on upgrades at Oshawa plant | CBC News
"GM Canada announced Wednesday that the company is spending $63 million to upgrade stamping operations at its Oshawa plant. The move will support preparations to build the next generation of gas-powered full-size pickups and enhancing capability in the service parts business, the company said in a news release. This additional investment underscores Oshawa's importance in GM's full-size truck portfolio, Jack Uppal, president and managing director of GM Canada, said in a statement."
"This announcement comes weeks after GM cut one of three shifts at the Oshawa plant back in January, which was expected to cause up to 1,200 job losses across the supply chain. When asked if this new funding comes from savings associated with those layoffs, spokesperson Ariane Souza Pereira did not respond to the question. Pereira said in an email that the funds will be used to to stamp body sides for trucks and to "expand the plant's capabilities to support our current and future product lineup." GM's Oshawa Assembly builds Chevrolet Silverado light and heavy-duty full-size pickups on its two remaining shifts."
