Alex Padilla announced he will not seek the 2026 California governorship and will remain in the U.S. Senate through 2028. He made the announcement at the U.S. Capitol with his wife at his side and referenced a June incident in which ICE agents tackled and handcuffed him during a press event. Padilla framed his decision around continued threats to civil rights during the current presidency and stated a commitment to defend the Constitution, fundamental rights, core values, and the American dream. He surprised reporters with the mid–election-day announcement and took no questions afterward.
