Corpus will get 14 day reprieve if board fires her
"San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus will remain sheriff for two weeks even if the Board of Supervisors votes to remove her. Corpus and her lawyers asked Superior Court Judge Nira Shapirshteyn to halt the supervisors from removing her for alleged corruption. Shapirshteyn ruled today that since the board has not had its final vote, she can't issue a halt to Corpus' removal at this point."
"Previously, it was understood that if the supervisors vote to remove Corpus, the action will be immediate, meaning she will have to surrender her gun and badge and leave her offices at 330 Bradford St. in Redwood City that day. Once the supervisors receive the recommendation of Hearing Officer James Emerson, their next step is to vote on whether to remove Corpus. The last day for Emerson to issue his ruling is Monday, Oct. 13."
Superior Court Judge Nira Shapirshteyn declined to halt the Board of Supervisors' removal process because the board has not yet held its final vote. The county will not fill the sheriff's vacancy for at least 14 days so Corpus' legal team can pursue efforts to stop her removal and seek reinstatement. Hearing Officer James Emerson must issue a recommendation by Monday, Oct. 13; both sides filed briefs at his request and those briefs are not yet publicly available. Voters amended the county charter in March to allow removal by a four-fifths supervisors' vote. The county has paid Corpus' legal fees and retained outside counsel but has not disclosed amounts.
