Alameda County DA to charge suspect in John Beam killing with murder
"The man accused of fatally shooting legendary Bay Area football coach John Beam last week is facing a murder charge and a minimum prison sentence of 50 years, Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson said in a Monday news conference. Cedric Irving Jr., 27, was arrested at approximately 4 a.m. Friday in San Leandro on suspicion of shooting Beam at Laney College on Thursday. Irving is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail, according to inmate records. Beam, who Dickson confirmed was shot in the head, died Friday at Highland Hospital."
"Dickson said it's unclear what Beam's relationship was to the suspect, who was not a registered student at Laney and doesn't have a criminal record. Oakland Police Department Assistant Chief James Beere previously said that investigators believe the shooting was a "targeted incident" and Irving was known to occasionally be on campus. Dickson confirmed that the gun used in the shooting was registered to Irving. During the news conference, she declined to go into detail about the suspect or his "state of mind." "
"Since Beam's death, community members and local officials have shared tributes and messages of grief as Beam was a well-known and beloved figure in Oakland and beyond. "He's a part of Oakland's legacy, he's touched so many people," Dickson said during the news conference. The shooting also sparked a call for stricter gun regulations in Oakland as it came just one day after a shooting at Skyline High School that left one student injured. Dickson said she was "absolutely sick to [her] stomach," referring to the back-to-back shootings."
