EWY is a single-country ETF tracking the MSCI Korea 25/50 Index with a 0.6% annual fee. It has risen sharply, including about 80% year-to-date and roughly 200% over the past year, despite expectations for a “Korea discount” country fund. The performance is driven by concentrated exposure to memory semiconductors. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix together represent close to half the fund, linking returns to DRAM pricing, HBM market share, and semiconductor capex cycles. The fund’s exposure also aligns with AI hardware demand, including NVIDIA GPU platforms that require high-bandwidth memory. Korea’s Corporate Value-Up program may further support valuation rerating through improved governance and higher payouts.
