"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life, Andrew added in the statement. With His Majesty's agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me,"
"The United Kingdom's Prince Andrew on Friday announced that he would give up the title of the Duke of York days before the publication of a posthumous memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who had accused him of raping her after being trafficked by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Effective immediately, Prince Andrew will no longer sign off as the Duke of York or append KG denoting Knight of the Garter after his name."
Prince Andrew relinquished the Duke of York title, stopped using KG and made other royal honors inactive with immediate effect. The decision followed renewed exposure of his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the imminent publication of a posthumous memoir by Virginia Giuffre. Giuffre accused Andrew of raping her after being trafficked by Epstein and died by suicide in April. Andrew denied the allegations but paid millions to settle a 2022 civil sexual assault case and was stripped of most titles and royal duties in 2022 due to his Epstein connections. The change was framed as prioritizing family and country.
