"In the late 1800s, when glass was very expensive, the pubs and bars would buy a barrel of whiskey, and then they would get one bottle and fill that. Then that would go behind the bar. And, of course, people would compete to have a nice-looking bottle behind the bar, as we do still today. And this was Yellowstone."
"I was able to buy for $3,800. And I got a discount because it had a slight crack in it. But they were designed to be very sturdy."
"This just hits a classic Kentucky bourbon profile. The liquid is being hand-bottled for now as the new release was originally designed to be a distillery exclusive, sitting at the sweet spot for taste in bourbon, which is around eight to 12 years of age and 110 proof."
Yellowstone Bourbon, established in 1872 by Joseph Bernard Dant and named after the national park, operated continuously through Prohibition and became Kentucky's best-selling bourbon in the 1960s. The brand found new ownership at Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky in 2015 under seventh-generation Master Distiller Stephen Beam. The Recollection Series represents the distillery's nationwide release, inspired by ornamental back bar decanters from the late 1800s when bars displayed expensive glass bottles filled from whiskey barrels. Beam sourced an original bottle for $3,800 on eBay to guide the design. The first release is an eight-year-old, non-chill-filtered bourbon at 110 proof, currently hand-bottled as a distillery exclusive.
