Barcelona erupts in violence as national Palestine strike turns chaotic
"The protest, which marched in major hubs all across Spain against the genocide in Palestine, had been announced since late September and continued forth despite a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel signed on Monday, October 13. Citing that lasting peace has not yet been reached, the CC OO and UGT unions decided to continue forth with the scheduled strike in which all workers and students had a right to participate."
"However, in the Catalan capital of Barcelona, things quickly spiralled out of control when the protest turned violent, with vehicles being set aflame, pepper spray being used by the riot police onto the protesters, and major roads were blocked. A total of 15 protesters were arrested. The riots were mainly concentrated in Sants and in Manresa. In Plaça Universitat in the city centre, thousands of students blocked traffic in solidarity. Cars were diverted and streets were blocked off."
A union-organised national strike in solidarity with Palestine took place on 15 October, continuing despite a ceasefire agreement on 13 October. CC OO and UGT justified the strike by saying lasting peace had not been reached and that workers and students had a right to participate. In Barcelona the demonstration turned violent, with vehicles set aflame, shop windows smashed, major roads blocked and pepper spray used by riot police. Fifteen protesters were arrested, with disturbances concentrated in Sants and Manresa. Thousands of students blocked traffic in Plaça Universitat, and some demonstrators attempted to impede an Israeli basketball team’s bus.
