"How can withered trees blossom?A time between ashes and roses is comingWhen everything shall be extinguishedWhen everything shall begin again"
"I wanted to bring it into that kind of context, but also make it poetic. I like to think poetry translates in a way that it gets to people's emotions and also maybe opens up different angles or viewpoints, Al-Qasimi says. This idea of renewal, looking at withering trees blossoming-nature really comes into it."
"The timing now, with everything happening in Gaza, it's even more poignant."
Hoor Al-Qasimi is the artistic director for the sixth Aichi Triennale and is president and director of the Sharjah Art Foundation. The exhibition, titled A Time Between Ashes and Roses, presents works by about 60 artists and groups from 22 countries across multiple venues in Nagoya. The title is drawn from a line by Syrian poet Adonis written after the 1967 Six-Day War. The curatorial theme examines moments of beauty colliding with cycles of violence and environmental collapse while invoking renewal and nature. Participating artists include John Akomfrah, Simone Leigh, Wangechi Mutu, Michael Rakowitz and Hiroshi Sugimoto. The edition coincides with heightened attention to Gaza and the 60th anniversary of the US atomic bombing.
