"Of the 31 works, half have been hidden from public view for more than a century, while 12 have not been seen on the secondary market in 40 years."
Sotheby's will hold an Old Master and 19th-century evening sale on December 3 in London featuring 31 works defined by exceptional scholarship and rare discoveries. Half of the works have been hidden from public view for more than a century, and 12 have not appeared on the secondary market in 40 years. Highlighted lots include Hans Eworth's Portrait of Thomas Howard (high estimate £3 million), Pieter Brueghel the Younger's The Census at Bethlehem (high estimate £5 million), a rediscovered Rubens oil sketch (high estimate £3 million), and a Rembrandt portrait with a £7 million high estimate. Extensive research and collaborations with outside scholars produced recent attribution and provenance findings, and the exhibition galleries are presented as visually striking and globally appealing.
