Sculptor Alma Allen officially selected to represent US at 2026 Venice Biennale
"Confirming earlier reports that his selection had been delayed by the 43-day United States government shutdown, the US State Department on Monday (24 November) confirmed that the Utah-born, Mexico-based sculptor Alma Allen will represent the US at the 2026 Venice Biennale. Allen's US Pavilion exhibition, Alma Allen: Call Me the Breeze (9 May-22 November 2026), is being organised by Jenni Pardo, the pavilion's commissioner and the founder of the organisation , and the independent curator Jeffrey Uslip."
"A state department makes clear that Allen's exhibition will align with US president Donald Trump's "America first" ideology, stating: "It will present artworks that highlight Allen's alchemical transformation of matter and explore the concept of 'elevation', both as a physical manifestation of form and as a symbol of collective optimism and self-realization, furthering the Trump Administration's focus on showcasing American excellence.""
Selection was delayed by the 43-day United States government shutdown. The Utah-born, Mexico-based sculptor Alma Allen will represent the US at the 2026 Venice Biennale with the US Pavilion exhibition Alma Allen: Call Me the Breeze (9 May–22 November 2026), organised by commissioner Jenni Pardo and curator Jeffrey Uslip. The State Department said the exhibition will align with President Trump's "America first" ideology and emphasize Allen's alchemical transformation of matter and the concept of 'elevation' as collective optimism and American excellence. The show will present around 30 sculptures, including new site-specific works and one outdoor forecourt installation. Allen uses wood, marble, volcanic rock and bronze to produce biomorphic forms that suggest motion and interaction within a larger imagined universe.
