"The ministry's decree, published on Saturday 21 March, declared it to be a national treasure, unable to leave France for 30 months."
"Drawings by Baldung, widely regarded as Dürer's most gifted protégé, are extremely rare, numbering around 250."
"The new discovery is the only silverpoint portrait still in private hands, according to the Beaussant Lefevre auctioneer Arthur de Moras."
"I said it can't be a Holbein, that's impossible. I immediately thought of Baldung, after the 2019 exhibition."
The French culture ministry intervened to prevent the sale of a drawing by Hans Baldung Grien, declaring it a national treasure. The drawing, a portrait of Susanna Pfeffinger, was set for auction with an estimated value of €1.5m to €3m. It is the only silverpoint portrait by Baldung still in private hands. The artwork was discovered by auctioneer Arthur de Moras and attributed to Baldung by expert Patrick de Bayser, who noted its significance in the context of Old Master drawings.
