"To quote Crystal Pite, A yearning for connection runs like a luminous thread through the whole show. Figures in Extinction is a massive three-act work blending dance, theatre, music, spoken word, video, and puppetry, running nearly three hours with two intervals. Collaboration involves Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite, British director Simon McBurney and Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) with an extensive technical team. The work pleads for connection across humans, nature, and the dead. Act I focuses on extinct animals, plants, and natural features lost to human action, using vivid choreographic imagery such as a dancer with oversized curved horns representing the Pyrenean Ibex. Voice-over lists losses while movement evokes birdsong, caribou migrations, and glacier forms.
