"The first few weeks of 2026 saw yet another swing in popular narratives about AI. Toward the end of last year, notable AI insiders were expressing skepticism about the path ahead for research, and a financial bubble had become a topic of open conversation, even among implicated CEOs. Soon, though, updates to some major models would shift the industry's focus again: Suddenly, they were much better at writing software."
"A lot of the surge in enthusiasm for AI coding was driven by Claude Code, a product popular with developers and built by Anthropic, a company that long ago bet on automating the tech industry as its path to making money. This meant attention for Anthropic and also for its co-founder and CEO, Dario Amodei. Now, he had the industry's mic."
"a long, cautiously optimistic, and widely read essay about the possibilities of what he termed "powerful AI," analogizing its deployment to a "country of geniuses in a datacenter" and making the case that, with a great deal of effort, it might be harnessed to achieve "the defeat of most diseases, the growth in biological and cognitive freedom, the lifting of billions of people out of poverty to share in the new technologies, a renaissance of liberal democracy and human rights.""
The early weeks of 2026 saw another shift in public narratives about AI after late-2025 insider skepticism and open talk of a financial bubble. Model updates made some systems markedly better at writing software. Claude Code, a developer-focused product from Anthropic, catalyzed much of the renewed excitement and elevated Anthropic and its co-founder and CEO, Dario Amodei. Amodei used that platform to focus attention on potential harms and long-term scenarios. Machines of Loving Grace (2024) framed powerful AI as a "country of geniuses in a datacenter" and argued that, with large effort, AI could defeat disease and expand freedoms while remaining haunted by risk. Since then he has emphasized geopolitical and labor concerns.
