"I didn't know what was happening,"
"confused, like when (Modi) grabbed my hand and put it up, and I just wasn't sure what we were supposed to be doing."
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited leaders of top AI companies to join him onstage as part of a commitment to build more inclusive and multilingual AI worldwide. Leaders from 13 tech companies gathered at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, clasping hands as Modi raised them. Everyone held hands except Sam Altman and Dario Amodei, who stood next to each other and avoided hand contact for several seconds, later raising their fists instead. The moment went viral on social media and became a visual symbol of rivalries within the AI industry, particularly between OpenAI and Anthropic. Altman said he was confused about what to do when Modi grabbed his hand, and Anthropic declined to comment.
