OpenAI has begun deploying an age prediction model to determine whether ChatGPT users are old enough to view sensitive or potentially harmful content. Chatbots from OpenAI and rivals have been linked to suicides, litigation, and congressional hearings, increasing pressure to improve safety for minors and adults. OpenAI released a Teen Safety Blueprint in November 2025 and Under-18 Principles for Model Behavior in December 2025. Commercial pressures, ad plans constrained by rules about marketing to minors, and erotica development create incentives to partition audiences and prevent exposing them to damaging material. Many adolescents use generative AI—over half of US adolescents older than 13 and an estimated 10–20% of those under 13. OpenAI acknowledges that automated age prediction remains technically difficult and imperfect.
