Malaysia and Indonesia temporarily restricted access to Elon Musk's Grok chatbot because of its capacity to generate deepfake images. Indonesia announced the restriction on Jan. 10 to protect women, children and the larger community from fake pornographic content created by AI. Malaysia's communications regulator imposed a temporary restriction on Jan. 11 after repeated misuse to generate obscene, sexually explicit, indecent, grossly offensive, and non-consensual manipulated images. Notices were issued to X and xAI-Grok in early January, but responses were judged insufficient to prevent harm or ensure legal compliance. X limited image generation to paying users on Jan. 9 and xAI responded to inquiries with the text "Legacy Media Lies."
