Google DeepMind has acquired the top executives of Windsurf in a $2.4 billion deal, following OpenAI's failed attempt to acquire the startup for $3 billion. The acquisition includes Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan and co-founder Douglas Chen, along with key research and development staff. Their expertise in AI-powered development environments positions DeepMind to enhance its Gemini efforts. Windsurf has become a prominent AI coding platform with impressive user engagement and revenue. Jeff Wang will take on the role of interim CEO, and Graham Moreno will provide leadership stability as president.
"Thrilled to welcome Windsurf founders Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen and some of the brilliant Windsurf engineering team to Google DeepMind," Demis Hassabis stated in an X post. He expressed excitement about working with them to enhance Gemini efforts on coding agents and tool use.
Chen has been instrumental in developing Windsurf's core technology that enables 'agentic coding,' providing autonomous software development capabilities beyond simple code completion.
Windsurf has transformed into a leading AI coding platform with hundreds of thousands of daily active users and around $100 million in annual recurring revenue.
Jeff Wang will serve as interim CEO, while Graham Moreno has been promoted to president, ensuring leadership stability for Windsurf's ongoing development.
