"I think there will be actually a high demand for jobs, but not necessarily the same jobs,"
"So I mean this is actually, this process has been happening throughout modern history."
"Anything that's physically moving atoms, like cooking food or farming, anything that's physical, those jobs will exist for a much longer time,"
"But anything that is digital, which is just someone at a computer doing something, AI is going to take over those jobs like lightning."
Artificial intelligence is already replacing digitally centric desk jobs and will continue to do so at an accelerated rate. Desk work that resembles historical manual calculation tasks will be automated rapidly, reducing demand for those specific roles while creating demand for different kinds of work. Physical labor and occupations that require human-to-human interaction, such as cooking, farming, and other jobs that move atoms, are likely to persist much longer. The transition will produce significant trauma and disruption for affected workers as job types shift and employment patterns adjust. In a benign long-term outcome, robots plus AI could make work optional and enable a universal high income, expanding wealth accessibility.
