AI disproportionately discriminates against trans people. It doesn't have to be this way. - LGBTQ Nation
"In our study, we found that nonbinary and transgender people are significantly more likely to view AI negatively than cisgender people,"
"With AI becoming so pervasive in everyday life, it's important to understand that not everyone wants to use it - which is troubling because they are often required to use AI (such as in healthcare and employment contexts) without meaningful consent."
Trans and nonbinary people are significantly more likely to view AI negatively than cisgender people. A survey of over 700 participants, combining a nationally representative sample with intentional oversamples of minorities, asked about attitudes toward AI, perceived life improvements, and willingness to use AI. Negative attitudes among gender minorities align with documented harms from facial recognition in law enforcement and surveillance, algorithmic content moderation, and stereotypical or offensive generative AI imagery. AI harms against gender minorities can be physical, psychological, social, and economic. Mandatory or coerced use of AI in contexts like healthcare and employment raises concerns about meaningful consent and equity.
