Explainer: Inside the Ratings of the Best Bicycle-Friendly Cities in the World
Briefly

The 2025 City Ratings from PeopleForBikes evaluated 2,901 cities globally, showcasing effective strategies for creating bicycle-friendly environments. Key U.S. cities like Mackinac Island, Davis, and Brooklyn were recognized for their rankings. This edition integrated real-time data from the Great Bike Infrastructure Project, emphasizing the importance of connected networks and meaningful metrics over mere infrastructure presence. Brooklyn rose to prominence among large cities, credited with a lower residential speed limit and a high density of desirable destinations, creating a comprehensive biking network.
"Cities that are truly great for biking have more than protected lanes and calm streets - they have a vision and a plan for continuous improvement," said Grace Stonecipher, infrastructure analyst and research manager at PeopleForBikes.
"Brooklyn is interesting because it has that lower residential speed limit," said Stonecipher. "It also just has a lot of the types of places that people want to go very close to where a lot of people live. Additionally, all of the intersections in Brooklyn are generally low stress... it ends up being this really complete network."
