Amazon is building extensive AI data centers in Indiana, covering 1,200 acres intended for Anthropic's AI model development. With an investment running into billions, they plan to build around 30 data centers. However, these facilities are significant energy consumers and require substantial water for cooling. Locals have raised concerns over environmental impacts, including protests regarding wetland destruction. Meanwhile, Amazon is also eyeing similar projects in Mississippi, intensifying competition with tech giants like Meta and OpenAI.
But AI data centers come with a whole host of issues. They're energy hogs, and are very thirsty water drinkers.
It's such an outrageously ambitious project, with untold billions in investment, that Amazon has tapped four separate construction firms to get the complex finished as soon as possible.
