Magic, religion, and science embody different stages in human understanding: from results-oriented simplicity in magic, to propitiation of invisible entities in religion, to patient observation and invention in science.
Science, characterized by patient observation, was seen by Frazer as possessing authority and efficacy that religion and magic lacked.
Frazer believed that science represented a breakthrough for mankind, providing a clue to the labyrinth of nature and unlocking many mysteries.
