Revealed: The dog breeds at the highest risk of dying from cancer
Briefly

Overall, medium-sized dogs are at higher risk of cancer mortality than the largest or smallest breeds, according to a study analyzing canine death records from three countries.
Breeds like Scottish terriers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Bullmastiffs also have significant cancer mortality risks, while Pomeranians, Miniature Pinschers, Shih Tzus, and Chihuahuas have the lowest risk.
Inbreeding may contribute to breed-specific differences in cancer risk, with larger breeds like Burmese Mountain Dogs and Bullmastiffs having a 40-50% chance of dying from cancer, compared to small breeds' 10% chance.
The flat-coated retriever was identified as having the highest cancer mortality risk at about 60%, attributed to a sarcoma with a higher frequency in this breed, as per Professor Leonard Nunney's study.
